Passata Workshop and more!
Concetta Sultan is currently staying in a small rural area, called Nilgen, about 10 kilometres from the small town of Lancelin, WA. During her stay she has managed to meet a group of very proactive women, whom she quickly discovered were actively wanting to make a difference in not only their own lives, but also a desire to encourage others in their community, to come together and learn sound traditional skills and practices that will help them moving forward during what has been a difficult time for many with the pandemic, loss of jobs, and rising inflation.
An inspiring bunch, who are dedicated to developing a supportive, positive, and self-sustaining lifestyle, rather than focusing on the difficulties most had experienced firsthand, during the past couple of years. Before long, Concetta who is also a Slow Food member and part of the committee, was invited to meet with them with the view of sharing family traditions of preserving food, skills and processes that fortunately have been passed down to her by her Sicilian family and ancestors. She then planned the delivery of her Autumn Series Workshops, which she has been running all over Perth since 2011. The group were determined to include learning how to make Passata, which upon organising looked unlikely, seeing as the first of the series kicked off in April and the most favourable time to pick tomatoes for passata is January. But with a bit of extra effort and the view of focusing on the steps and processes of making passata, Concetta managed to successfully include the Passata Workshop as well, which now means this group can hit the ground running in January 2023 with all the skills needed to make their own tomato puree. The criteria the group are mostly focused on in this series, is food they can preserve, as most of the women are successfully growing lots of vegetables, fruits, etc, a very resourceful group, to say the least.
The women, as you will see from the beautiful photos, were super enthusiastic as they participated in the simple process of making their own tomato puree. It was such a beautiful and enjoyable experience for all involved, learning, eating and even some singing and dancing too!
With Olive season now upon us, it’s time for the Olive Workshop, which is planned for Saturday, 21 May 2022 in Lancelin, learning the ancient Sicilian art of picking, processing, and preserving Olives… ALL NATURALLY (no preservatives).
Word has now got out and they now have people coming from far and wide to join in and share in learning simple, traditional, and valuable skills for themselves and for others, to bring back to their own communities.
