Black Barley Australia was founded by Roger Duggan when he sourced 160 grams of ancient grain from University seed banks.
Black barley is a multi ‘Delicious Produce Award’ winning ancient grain with origins from Ethiopia.
Black barley is a wholefood grain and contains one of the highest proteins of all grains. It has a beautiful nutty taste and a wonderfully chewy texture and is well positioned for the emerging plant-based protein market. It’s a versatile grain that can accompany many contemporary and modern dishes.
The health benefits of the ancient grain include cardiovascular wellbeing. Its antioxidant qualities have high anti-cancer capabilities and great for stomach flora. Most of all it is incredibly flavoursome.
The grain was meticulously sourced from University seed banks and is now grown on Roger’s family farm in New Norcia, Western Australia. Roger’s vision is to make black barley gain its reputation as a healthy culinary necessity. Roger would love to share his enthusiasm for BB to become a food standard.
Black Barley graces the tables of many of Australia’s most beautiful and talented restaurants such as: Bennelong, Quay, Cumulus ins, Cumulus up, Ides, Poly, Mona to name just a few.
Recently, in July 2021, Black Barley Australia was accredited with the Slow Food Snail of Approval.
Black Barley was already awarded a number of Delicious Produce Awards:
